Bringing People Downtown
As Transforming Downtown Dover: Capital City 2030 continues to evolve, I am hopeful that
cultural tourism and the role that Dover’s cultural assets play in underpinning and uplifting
Downtown, with the potential to enliven Downtown even more, will be more formally
acknowledged in the master plan. Please check out our calendar of events for February to
learn more about how we are already working to draw hundreds of people to Downtown
area each week including Sundays: https://myemail.constantcontact.com/Museum-

Via Zoom
The Biggs pays tribute to local Delaware artist Mary Putman with a spotlight exhibition of
some her most famous works including “Fire on the Marsh.” There will be a catalog
accompanying the exhibition. Mary will be on hand for an evening book launch event and to
talk about her work and process on March 2 at the Museum.
Front Row Center: Icons of Rock Blues and Soul | The Photography of Larry Hulst
March 17 – June 19
Rock, blues, country and everything in-between; photographer Larry Hulst has captured
some of the biggest legends of our time live on stage. Through more than 70 iconic images,
Hulst brings the history of rock ‘n’ roll and beyond to the Biggs in the exhibition Front Row
Center. From AC/DC to Carlos Santana, Janis Joplin to Jimmy Hendrix, and Willie Nelson to
David Bowie, Hulst captures dynamic moments from a generation’s greatest musicians.
• Art League Update – as provided via email from Ginny Jewell:
The Dover Art League thanks the DDP and committee members for the opportunity to be a
guest of the committee and looks forward to building relationships with each of you.
● We are currently finishing up our nearly sold out Winter programming and planning our
Spring/Summer catalogs. We have also completed a workshop through the DDOA on
Inclusiveness, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility. The DAL is excited to build
programming around this training and reach more Dover residents than ever!
● Our membership and member gallery continues to grow. We encourage those who wish
to sell their art locally to get in touch with our gallery manager, Chelsea Memmolo or to
visit our website thedoverartleague.com
● We are looking for teachers! Specifically, the Dover Art League is seeking teachers who
are experienced in teaching, creating a curriculum, and who can provide samples of their
work. We would love to work with student-teachers as well. The Dover Art League pays
$25/hour. Applicants can reach out to us through Chelsea or our website.
● Our current goals include working with Councilman David Anderson and the City of
Dover to increase the safety and design of the area in the rear of our building by
increasing the lighting, reducing debris, and exploring ways to obtain fencing around the
parking area.
● The Dover Art League is looking forward to collaborating with other Arts Organizations
and Colleges in Downtown Dover.
Again, thank you so much for allowing us this opportunity. We look forward to learning about
the committee and being a part of Downtown in this way.
• Holiday Window Decorating Contest Update
Tina provided a list of the winners:
1st place – Maxine’s Fashions
2nd place – Black Swamp Artisanal Market
3rd place – Mitten and Winters
Mayor’s Choice – Mitten and Winters
Honorary Mention – Wedding Botique
Ginny stated the Dover Art League didn’t participate due a conflict with juried window exhibits.
Tina stated she would provide Ginny a list of dates for window contests throughout the year
so the Art League could consider participating in ones that would fit their schedule.

• Downtown Banners
Jordan presented her research on the downtown banners. The committee agreed that they
would decide on 10 plein art paintings to feature with a vertical, navy blue Downtown Dover
logo with two font options. Jordan will send out mockups for the committee to review.
The holiday banners would be the ones that Laura Parks drafted. Jordan would do mockups
with the two fonts of the navy blue Downtown Dover logo for the committee to review.
• New Business-Del Tech Student Design Conceptual Project
Tina and Diane shared they had the opportunity to review work done by architectural
students from DSU and wondered if the committee would like to engage further with them.
Elena suggested they help review the façade applications since historically there had been
an architect on the committee and currently there is not.
