Read these numbers with care

  • These are crimes reported to police. Many crimes are never reported, so the true number is higher.
  • Police departments send these numbers to the FBI by choice. A year without a full 12 month report shows as a gap in the chart and the table, never as zero.
  • In 2021 the FBI switched every agency to a new reporting system called NIBRS, and many departments in the country have no numbers for 2021. Dover police have reported through NIBRS since 2001, by the FBI agency list, and reported every month of 2021.
  • The rate uses the population the FBI lists for Dover each year. It can differ a little from the census count.
  • Changes in how crimes are counted, in police staffing and in the city limits can move these numbers, so one year to the next is not proof of a trend.
