THE CITY OF DOVER CAPITAL OF THE FIRST STATE Public Meeting: HAWK signal at Del. 8 near new Dover High School site Time: 5 p.m., during Dover City Council’s Safety Advisory & Transportation Committee meeting Date: Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 Place: Conference Room, Dover City Hall, 15 Loockerman Plaza, Dover For more information: Call the Dover Planning Office at (302) 736-7196 DOVER — Dover City Council’s Safety Advisory & Transportation Committee is scheduled on Sept. 25 to hold a public meeting to discuss the installation of a HAWK signal, or High-intensity Activated crossWalK, at the inter- section of Del. 8 and Heatherfield Way. This is near the proposed east entrance of the new Dover High School, which is scheduled to open in the autumn of 2014. The city invites residents who live near the proposed signal to attend the committee meeting, learn more about the signal, ask questions and make comments at that time. Representatives from the Delaware Department of Transportation plan to give a presentation at the meeting about the signal, and will be prepared to answer questions from the committee and the public. How does a HAWK signal work? A HAWK signal, also called a pedestrian hybrid beacon, is normally dark for vehicular traffic. The signal acti- vates when a pedestrian presses the activation button, much like at a crosswalk at a regular traffic signal. Once activated, the HAWK signal goes through stages to stop traffic long enough for the pedestrian to safely cross the street. Once the pedestrian crosses, traffic resumes as normal, and the HAWK signal resets itself for future activation. Proposed Signal Location Site of New Dover High School Example of HAWK signal in use.
