Noting that the costs of heating oil and other heating material have increased significantly, Mr. Bonar reminded everyone of the low-income heating assistance program. He advised members that the State of Delaware has not taken action to provide a sufficient amount of low-income heating assistance for those residents with limited means. Mr. Bonar stated that the federal government budgeted over $5B for this program during the last several years; however, the last proposal submitted was for $2.5B. He encouraged members of Council to go on record in support of funding the federal low-income heating assistance program at the same level as previous years. He advised members that he has drafted a letter and forwarded it to the City Clerk’s Office for circulation to members of Council and requested support in sending the letter to U.S. Senators and Congressmen. Responding, Council President Leary suggested that this matter be placed on an agenda for consideration as soon as possible. Mayor Carey advised members that he, along with Mr. Anderson, recently attended a National League of Cities Conference and that the highlight of the conference was the election of George Wright (former Mayor of Smyrna, and Executive Director of the Delaware League of Local Governments) to serve on the National League of Cities Board of Directors. He noted that there have only been two (2) Board of Directors nominated to the National League of Cities from the State of Delaware in the history of the National League of Cities: Crawford Carroll and George Wright. He stated that this designation deserved a great deal of honor. By unanimous consent, the meeting adjourned at 7:59 P.M. TRACI A.
