Updates
Planning and Funding for New Library
The Library and architects hosted a Green Summit for the public on the 30th of September to talk
about the plans for alternative energy and sustainable design for the new building.
The Steering Committee met on the 30th as well to review the progress towards sustainability in the
Design and Development Phase. This phase is now 99% complete.
The Capital Campaign is off to a good start with most of the leadership positions filled. The first
meeting of the Capital Campaign leaders was held on October 1, 2009 and opened with an overview
of the building projects presented by the architects. Mrs. Markell, Mrs. Stone, Mayor Carey were
among those attending. The morning began with official photographs taken of the campaign
leadership.
Skate Park
The Skate Park Committee passed out fliers to Elm Terrace and near homes for, and held a,
community outreach meeting on Sept 21st at Christ Church. Councilman Gene Ruane, Parks Director
Zach Carter and YMCA Director Rick Gould also attended the meeting.
Five residents attended the meeting, shared thoughts / concerns, and seemed to be cautiously
supportive of a Temporary Skate Park located at Paul’s Property. One resident has offered to be the
community contact. The Committee has committed to keep the community contact up to date on
progress and recommendations and seek further input.
Resident Concerns included:
a. The “temporary” nature of the skate park may end up being permanent, without residents say in
the matter. For one of them, the term “temporary” would indicate use for only 12 to 18 months.
They requested a time limit for the temporary park, or at least a one‐year review.
b. Residents wondered / hoped a permanent site would also be identified – mitigating possible
temporary to permanent creep at the Paul’s Property site.
c. Unwanted persons may enter the skate park from State Street, going behind residences
and over fences.
d. Dilapidated fences may not keep people out.
e. There may be an increase of auto and skateboard traffic through the Elm Terrace
neighborhood. How to mitigate?
f. Will the skate park area be fully enclosed in new fencing or rely on some existing
fencing.
